Unit 8-Two Practices I Found Most Beneficial

Hello! I hope that everyone is having a great week so far!

The two most beneficial exercises or practice sessions for me were the subtle mind exercise that we discussed in our blogs for unit 5 and also the relaxation exercise that we completed for our unit 3 blogs, The Crime of the Century.

I will discuss The Crime of the Century first since it is the one that we touched on during this course prior to my other choice. This audio had the same outcomes for me that it did the first time I had listened to it, except one thing, this time I actually did feel energized at the end of it. I am not sure if that has anything to do with the type of day that I have had compared to the type of day I was having those few weeks ago when we did it or not, but I did feel energized this time which was refreshing. This audio can be used in my life to foster mental fitness by giving me the capability to know how to calm myself down and reach a state of relaxation. For example, after a rough day at work sometimes it is very hard to come home and just put that part of the day behind you, this audio can be used to help me to understand how to deep breath and to care about and love myself enough to relax and not be upset the rest of the day.

The second exercise I chose was the subtle mind exercise. I loved this exercise just as much the second time around as the first time. I really do enjoy the audio sessions where they are talking less for some reason. This exercise helps me to foster mental fitness in my life because it helps me to clear my mind and focus. I have found that if I am in a hurry and need to get things done I can actually get things done faster by first taking a few deep breaths and clearing my mind. A specific example of this would be when I am doing homework. As I’m sure everyone does, I have a busy schedule with work, school, gym, housework, trying to find time for myself, etc. So, this audio has helped me to learn how to calm down, clear my head, and then find focus to get the most important things done.

  1. Kristen,

Glad you’re posting early with finals coming I know we will all be busy. The subtle mind practice is great I also try and work it in when I’m busy with life. A few deep breaths go a longs ways.

I’m thinking that your second attempt at The crime of the Century was a nicer experience has you knew how to utilize the exercise better. You had also had more time in class to learn and understand all the materials we are dealing with.

What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger or so it is said. I’m guessing by the time your done with school you’ll have a degree and better work options. You will also have several tools to deal with stress. Have a great weekend and I hope we all finish class and school strong.

  2. Hello Kristen,

I did like the subtle mind exercise also but I really have a hard time relaxing. I do find that taking a hot bath with the lights dimmed and candles lit relaxing. Until the water gets cold. lol I am going to try to listen to an exercise in the bath next time and see if I can incorporate some of the calming mind experience into something that I already find relaxing and see if that help me. If it does work than maybe I will try to do all of the exercises from this course in the bath. Maybe this will help me relax ans focus on the exercise more. Thank you for your post and stay positive.

  3. Hi Kristen,

Mental fitness has always been my way of life. Meditating and visualization exercises has been very helpful for me to achieve much of my success throughout my life. Breathing exercises are a way of settling your mind, body and spirit. Thank you for your positive aura.

  4. Kristen,

great post. I am glad to see that you found the exercises beneficial. As the finals are coming up, these relaxation and visualization methods will come in handy. Personally, I have adopted them into my daily routine. The one that I found most beneficial is the Loving Kindness because this is an area I need to work on. Not that I am a mean person, ha ha ha, but because I have some "baggage" I need to get rid of.
Best of luck and looking forward to your final post.

  5. Kristen,

me personaly I liked the loving kindness meditation it helped me relax, the ocean waves calmed my mind to clear and calm down. I think every person is different when it comes to meditation what may work for me may not work for someone else in the end. I try to meditation every day if I can also I meditate when my 5 year old is throwing one of her drama moments also known as a tatrum it helps me keep my cool but not always.

  6. I too prefer meditation practices where there is less talking. The voice startles me every time I get deep into meditation. I generally listen to ambient music while meditating on my own.
