Unit 2 Post-Journey on Relaxation

Hello! Hope everyone is having a great week, I'm glad it's Friday!

Wow do I feel relaxed, yet energized, after that video! I found it interesting that simply thinking of a certain part of the body will allow the blood to flow to that area of the body. I was skeptical at first, but once I gave in and actually started thinking of my arms and hands, they did become warm and heavy. My arms also felt like they were tingling, I assume because there was a greater degree of blood flowing throughout the area than is normal.

Upon relaxation, the GI tract will contain 80% of the blood flow, as mentioned in the video. From this, I get the idea that a person who has a weakened GI tract would benefit from relaxation techniques, such as meditation or yoga. In my other class we were discussing the importance of having a working GI tract, using relaxation techniques to allow the majority of the blood to be flowing in this area seems as though it would be useful to help the GI tract to get back to a good state.

  1. It really is amazing how well these relaxation exercises work. I was like you at first and didn't think that things such as meditation and relaxation imagery actually worked. However, since I have been in the health and wellness program I have been able to keep an open mind and so far have improved my own overall health!

  2. Hello Kristen,

I did try to move my arms during the exercise and I could not do it. I think that is is interesting that the combination of his voice and the background noise it relaxed me right away. I didn't think it would work so quickly but it did. It worked so well I feel asleep the first time before it was over so I had to try it again and I fell asleep again but made it through to the end. I'm going to see if it works on my daughter Savanna 16 and my son Cameron 11. We don't think about it much but children have a lot of stress these days. I think that things are much harder on children now in school as opposed to when I was in high school. I had fun got good grades and never brought home a book. Good times! I wish the children of today could feel as carefree as I did back then. Have a great day everyone! Marci

  3. Hello Kristen,

It is an awesome experience in realizing how beneficial relaxation is to a person's overall well-being. Before this class, my method of relaxation was having someone playing in my hair, listening to music in a room with scented candles and a dimmed light, and hearing the sound of the rain beating on the roof. But now, I am engaging within deep meditation along with yoga, and to my surprise they have a very calming effect on me. From this moment on, I having been changing from the inside out.
    Very useful information Kristen.
